Re: Toyota Owners (online) Unite for Resolution: Engine Slu
Posted by Brad Newman on 7/27/07

On January 14th, 2002, after much study and test-driving new SUV's, I bought what I
had believed to be the BEST SUV for my money, Toyota Highlander. December of 2006 I
received the notification of class action lawsuit which, not realizing the situations
involved placed it into the glove compartment of my 2002 Highlander. January of 2007,
took two trips, one trip was 450 miles round, and the following weekend, 400 miles
round trip. After the first trip, the Highlander used 2 1/2 quarts of oil and the
second trip consumed 3 quarts of oil. I took my Toyota to the dealership where I
purchased it from and got the same BS as other people were receiving, that,
negligence would be the only cause for oil consumption and oil sludging. Being a self-
aclaimed "back-yard mechanic," I can and will attest to the fact that #1 my vehicle
was/had NEVER been neglected as all oil changes performed were by myself with the
BEST quality engine oil available, and #2 that what I had experienced was oil
sludging. I took, as I had said, the vehicle back to the dealership where I had
purchased it, and after repeated denials by Toyota repair center to oil sludging as
being a possibility, took the mechanic by the hand to my vehicle, removed the oil
fill cap and wringed the inside of cap with finger and asked him to describe the grit
which I removed from it. His response was (quote) "engine oil sludge." At this point,
I insisted on further inspection to determine the amount of damage, to include,
removal of oil pan and inspection and compression checks on all cylinders. I received
phone call from tech stating that he found no appreciable wear, and that he could not
find the cause for engine sludging. I then asked him what his intensions were at that
point and he said reassembly of pan. I told him BS, get to the bottom of the problem
and repair vehicle, some time later I received call stating that he found problem and
rectified...new valve covers. Now, being a person that has not only repaired
vehicles, and also built engines, I also know what causes sludging...to say the
least, I am not easily fooled. I returned to the dealership, picked up my Highlander
and the next hour watched it metamorphasize from a Toyota Highlander to a 2007 Nissan
Murano. I do not like being deceived, and being accused of neglect when I know
better, and, contrary to some of the beliefs written about Charlene, I believe she
hit the nail on the head...people need to know the truth about Toyota, and whoever
else may be scamming the public out of their money...the last thing Toyota heard from
me was that they would never feel the inside of my billfold again...hopefully Nissan
    doesn't make the same mistake!!!!
