Re: Brake Failure (ABS) in Toyota Sienna, Camry, Avalon
Posted by JMB on 5/15/08
I have a 1999 Toyota Sienna and my brakes had been making a clunking noise for about a year. I had new pads put in and the drums turned and the brakes still made the clunking noise occasionally. I had the brakes reinspected...nothing. The brakes went out on me on a freeway offramp going around a corner at around 50 MPH. My foot went to the floor and I had almost no braking ability at all. I was able to downshift to get the car to slow down enough to pull over but it was very frightening. It appears that my ABS computer decided that I was slipping and turned off braking to the rear brakes. I ended up having to replace the ABS computer/actuator. The brakes appear to be working great now but I don't have confidence in my van any longer.
