My daughter's name is Kimberly Giambra, she was 30 years old when she passed away on October 27,2009 at the Baptist East. It all started when she was diagnosed with asthma at an early age. her doctor prescribed large doses of steroids every 3-4 months which caused her curent problems. She was diagnosed with bipolar and lost her TennCare coverage while attending college. She tried to use over the counter inhalers to control her asthma. In January of 2009 she went to the emergency room due to complications. They admitted her and she was found to have the following;acute asthma exacerbation, cushingoid disease, anemia, thromboytopenia, probable hemolytic anemia, and hyperlipidemia. Kimberly was unable to work for the past 3 years and did not qualified for medical assistance in Tennessee because she's not pregnant. Since January she was admitted into the hospital three more times. Kimberly was denied SSI and in the process of appeal when she was admitted back into the hospital on September 15,2009 for the fourth time. Prior to being admitted in September, Kimberly was treated for her cushingoid and lost around 100 pounds of water weight. But she developed a rash on her on her body and woke up on the 15th of September with the whites of her eyes red. Kimberly admitted and diagnosed with Churd Strauss Vasculitis, COPD, Non-alcoholic sclerosis of the liver due to prednisone, and unknown infection and her kidneys failed. When Kimberly first entered the hospital they said she had an infection and called infectious disease personnel. She ended up in the ICU unit twice. On the last day we saw her, they called us and wanted to do a kidney dialysis but later called and said they could not do the dialysis due to the fection. Kimberly was given large doses of prednisone for the Churd Strauss thatcaused her to go from 150 pounds to over 218 pounds. She also developed diabetes. We kept telling them that prednisone was her enemy and she could not take it. They told us that they could do chemotherapy but the specialist would not come to the hospital. On the 27th of October around 2:20 am, we received the call that Kimberly had taken a turn for the worse. When we arrived, Kimberly had already passed away. We were never met by a doctor to explain what happened. It is our feeling that Kimberly did not receive the care she would have received if she had insurance.
