My daughter was placed on high dose prednisone back in 2005 for
severe asthma exacerbation. She was given 120 mg of prednisone
daily until I was made aware of the dose. At which point I
demanded the prednisone be stopped and she be placed on IV
solumedrol, a much safer corticosteroid. Six months after that
hospital admission, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. There
is no family history of type 1 diabetes and she has suffered
severe medical problems related to her diabetes - including grand
mal seizures and coma. No one told us that prednisone can
actually destroy the pancreas and cause permanent diabetes.
Today, however, it is well know within the medical community that
prednisone can indeed cause permanent diabetes.
