Post: avascular necrosis after prednisone
Posted by Belinda Langley on 2/13/14
Just diagnosed yesterday with AVN in right hip after 4 days of inability to bear weight on my leg. I'm certain the other large joints will also need to be imaged to rule out AVN. My previous rheumatologist was a JERK. He instructed me to continue increasing my prednisone until I achieved pain relief. He didn't want to prescribe analgesics to me. I was being treated for rheumatoid arthritis and trying to continue working as a nurse. This doctor never took any xrays other than hands and feet and EVERY TIME negated my complaints of pain and disability. I am a very astute critical care nurse and even I was not aware of the risk of AVN with prednisone. Prednisone has been viewed as a wonder drug, appropriate for many afflictions. In my opinion the rheumatologist was negligent for not having monitored the dosages, for leaving it to the patient's subjective information (pain) be the factor that decided dosage of this extremely dangerous hormone that has ruined my life. My current physician has attempted to wean me down to low dose steroids and has been successful in getting me down to a quarter of the dose that I was on (80 mg for over a year). The only question I was asked about my high dose steroids was "how does your stomach feel?" It was not important to know if I wanted to kill anyone or if my bones were crumbling. Something needs to be done.
