I left solo practice 2 years ago suffering from terminal burnout. I've been at the college for the last year. There were many reasons for leaving Solo Practice. Lack of a support network, marketing difficulties, client conflicts, etc. It the end it was the total isolation I felt and a feeling of futility. It came to a point where I dreaded picking up the phone since that meant another client with another load of stress and noone else to help carry the burden. I'm not sure alternative careers will pay much better, though if I get the promotion, I will make more than I did as a solo, and more than I made as an Associate for the law firms I worked for, though nowhere near what a successful medium/big firm partner will make. If I don't get the promotion, I will go back to law, but having a non-law job gives me the ability to be picky and bide my time.
