I think I've been a bit naieve about some of these services.
I did some asking around, and - while a handful of people
have had decent experiences with these companies
(LegalMatch, etc) - by and large, the results aren't too
good. I always worry about these message boards, because
you never know if so and so works for LegalFish or
LegalMatch or Casepost... and they might try to badmouth one
company and talk up their own... But I think its fair
enough to say that the general consensus is that its best to
steer clear of these services.
You're right. Some people are spending 3k a month to
advertise. The pay-per-click stuff can get very expensive.
In the end, I think its a process of trial and error. I
know some guys who swear by television spots... but if you
practice in a major urban market, tv time is expensive...
and you'll have a ton of competition.
Try to minimize your risk. If you're going to advertise
through one of these companies, negotiate with them. They
seem desparate for business. When LegalMatch comes at you
with $30,000 a year... with 10k of that upfront.. just tell
them know way... Get everything on a short term contract
with the bare minnimum amount of money invested up front.
Check references. Get a trial. Do whatever you can to make
sure you're not wasting money.
I really do appreciate the advise that people have offerred
on this board. It's probably saved me several thousands of
dollars.
