Post: Startup costs of my own practice are not the problem, but...

This is a great messageboard. So much more refreshing and inspiring than www.jdjive.com. Anyway, I've been out of law school almost five years now, had a clerkship, worked in a mid-sized firm where I've been doing a lot of work different from what I thought I'd be doing, partnership is not likely with this place, and I'd really like to move on as I feel I've hit a plateau in my learning. I'd love to start my own practice and the startup costs are not the problem - I believe I could cover startup and other ongoing 1st year costs for about $8000 (and I'm sure some solos think that is on the high side), but...my first year living expenses are. I figure I won't bring in a tremendous amount of money my first year as a solo and even if I do, a lot of it will be reinvested in upgrading my practice - i.e., moving to a real office, furniture, higher malpractice insurance, better office equipment, etc. I also still have law school loans, about $19,000. Am I wrong about being hesitant? Surely not every solo practitioner started out in pristine financial condition. Certa
