Post: Defamation of Character

I worked for an employer that has a nurse manager that fires anyone that intimidates her and her position. I just happened to be one of those fired. She could not give me a reason. I live in a "right to work" state and she told me after 10 months of excellent evals, that I was not what she was looking for. This was back in Feb. 2005. I recently learned through a friend that lives 6 states away that she was told by a nurse manager at 2 hospitals in our area that the nurse manager I worked for fired me because of inappropriate behavior with the cardiologist I worked with and that we were having a too close of a relationship. Now the town I live in and the hospitals here think I was having a affair with this doctor! I cannot get a job. I have been a nurse for 7 years with a excellent review and resume, with critical care and nurse manager experience. I still do not have a job in this town due to this rumor she has started. What recourse do I have to protect my reputation, job performance, and my family?
