    What is Manganism?

    Manganism is characterized by mental difficulties and the
    impairment of motor skills. Manganism is similar to
    Parkinson's Disease and is often misdiagnosed as
    Parkinson's, however the pathology of the two conditions
    are very different.

    Manganism is often refered to as manganese poisoning or
    manganese toxicity. Manganism is also sometimes called
    Parkinsonism.

    What Causes Manganism and Who is at Risk?

    Manganism is caused by an individual being exposed to high
    levels of the heavy metal Manganese.The most common type
    of worker to be diagnosed with manganism are miners,
    welders and agriculture workers. With that said, it is
    also alarming that the use of manganese is widespread,
    making manganism a continued concern.

    Manganism Symptoms

    The most common manganism symptoms observed are as follows:

    Muscle stiffness and soreness, Fatigue and weakness,
    Speech disturbances, Loss of coordination, Abnormal walk,
    Tremors, Leg cramps or weakness, Fixed facial expression,
    Impotence Difficulty breathing, Difficulty swallowing,
    Slow and clumsy movements, Stooped posture, and Mental and
    emotional disturbances.
