I was able to request that the doctor I went to have a
specialty or a majority of his practice in spinal
problems... which was important since the only docs that
accepted WC in my county were two sports-injury docs
(shoulders, knees, etc.). The ins. co. let me travel two
counties over (from Panama City to Destin) to see a doctor
there. They paid my mileage, too. Of course, it was a pain
in the butt to do that.
Later the ortho in Destin recommended a neuro consult for
surgery, and he had ideas on who he wanted me to see (neuros
in Pensacola and Ft. Walton) but insurance sent me to a doc
in Panama City. Overall, it's worked well for me.
In my research on this subject I've found that you can ask
to have your doctor changed ONE TIME, and ONE TIME only. So,
if you do choose to change doctors once one has been
assigned to you, choose carefully!
