Once you have filed a claim for workers compensation benefits how long that claim remains open will depend mostly on how long medical treatment lasts. Once medical treatment is concluded if you are left with any permanent limitations and you agree with the determinations made and don't object then your case should go forward with some form of resolution that compensates you for that loss that is ultimately submitted to a WCAB judge for approval resulting in a formalized award of benefits to you. If your medical treatment results in a cure then once medical treatment is concluded your claim techinically ends. If you have further problems down the road to the same body part with the same employer whether you will need to file a new claim will depend on how much time has in fact gone ultimate the medical determination of whether the problem is considered only a temporary aggravation of the previous problem or something more.
