Law on Equality Between Women and Men
The Network of Legal Experts on the application of
Community law on equal treatment between men and women was
set up in 1984 with a three-fold purpose:
Facilitate the Commission to monitor the implementation of
the acquis communautaire in the Member states with regard
to legislation and case law on equal treatment between
women and men.
Assist the Commission in the preparation of European Court
of Justice cases, in particular infringement procedures
Be a "think-tank" for assisting the Commission to develop
new strategies and ideas.
Composition
The Network members are senior lawyers and/or academics,
specialised in national legislation in the area of gender
equality covering all EU Member States as well as Iceland,
Norway, Liechtenstein, Bulgaria and Romania.
Tasks
Provide information to the European Commission on
the Member States’ progress in relation to the
implementation of EU legislation on equal treatment and
equal opportunity
national initiatives in the field of gender equality law
and related political developments
national court rulings
and assess these developments with a view to their
compatibility with the acquis communautaire.
Assist the European Commission by providing know-how, data
and ideas with a view to new legislative initiatives of
the Commission
Produce the Bulletin on Legal Issues in Equality
The Bulletin is intended to disseminate information on
legal developments at national and Community level in the
field of gender equality. It is designed as a resource
tool for researchers and policy-makers and is a pointer
towards the relevant national and EU publications and
sources of information.
The Bulletin is published by the Commission three times a
year. It is accessible on the Internet.
