Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), the 8th largest water and wastewater utility in the country, provides safe and reliable water, life’s most precious resource, and return clean water to our environment, all in a financially responsible manner.
We are currently seeking for a Senior Counsel in our Laurel office. This position performs legal work at the highest and most complex level. The successful candidate will provide the highest level of advice and service to the General Counsel and senior management on matters of policy and strategy as they may relate to, or be affected by, legal considerations.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Serves as Acting General Counsel in the General Counsel’s absence
• Assists in the preparation and presentation of departmental budget, assessments, goals and action items as needed; Assists in day-to-day management
• Prepares and processes briefs, pleadings and legal memoranda for the General Counsel's final review
• Represents General Counsel and/or the Commission as required at hearings, conferences and before federal, state, and local entities, agencies and governing bodies
• Assists General Counsel in all types of legal transactions involving WSSC business
• Serves as senior attorney in general litigation matters including cases involving federal laws or agencies
Requirements: Ten or more years of progressively responsible professional legal experience in the area of civil practice, and graduation from an accredited law school. Either currently admitted to the Maryland Bar and to the Bars of the Maryland Federal District Court and the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals., or such admissions are obtained within eighteen (18) months of commencing employment. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and ability to obtain a WSSC driver's license.
The Senior Counsel must possess demonstrated skill in coordinating and managing departmental activities, demonstrated ability to conduct public meetings and serve as principle legal officer at Commission meetings, work sessions, and executive sessions and demonstrated ability to work with senior management and commissioners on a one-on-one basis. Comprehensive knowledge of environmental law, condemnation law, labor and employment law, etc. and comprehensive knowledge of federal, Maryland, and Prince George's and Montgomery Counties' laws and ordinances.
