Post: Supplies required by employer of part-time hourly personnel

Does an employer have the right in California to require part-time hourly employees to provide certain "tools of the trade" for himself when he is on the job. One hardware store is called its part-time and full-time employees in and gave them a list of tools-of-the-trade that they must carry while on the job: i.e., Pen, Tape Measure, Notepad, Keys(they will provide) to locked cases, Radio and earpiece, Calculator, Nametag ---no exceptions. They will provide, even though they do not specifically say this only the Keys, Radio/earpiece, Nametag. The rest is to be carried and provided by the employee. Is this requirement legal? Part time employees are those that work 32/hr/week - Sunday through Wednesday. Seems like a lot to ask an employee to purchase just to work there. Pay is 8.00/hr. No even pens to write orders with are furnished. Curious if they can get away with this. Respond to gcscmitchell@sbcglobal.net
