While employers can land themselves in trouble if they treat
exempt employees as non-exempt (in certain situations, they
can end up responsible for backpay/overtime and jeopardize the
exempt status of certain classes of employees), what you are
describing doesn't look like that at all.

While it stands to reason that exempt positions often have a
certain amount of flexibility built into them, it doesn't mean
that you set your own hours. It also doesn't mean that you
can leave early because you finished your work -- many
employers require coverage for specific hours, even if
immediate work is complete. As an exempt employee, your
employer can absolutely give you work outside of your eight
hour work day without additional compensation.
