hello. I live in Texas and this is my situation. About 2
weeks ago I filled out an application to rent an apartment
here. I was called a couple of days later by someone who
worked at the apartment complex and said my application had
been approved and to come in and sign a lease. So a couple
of days later I came in and filled out and signed every
form on the lease and was given a copy of it for my
records. It shows what my monthly rent is and move in date
and everything. The thing is I dont recall the associate I
was with ever signing anything. He just said I was approved
and on the move in date shown on the lease that I signed I
was to pay for the first months rent and be given a key.
Well what happened then was I began doing all of the
ordinary things someone would do when moving. I called the
utility companies to get everything turned on and I packed
all of my belongings. On my move in day I left where I had
been living and headed out toward my new apartment and then
my phone rings and I answer and it is the same guy who
worked at the apartments now saying that my application had
been denied and that I could not move in because his
manager wouldnt sign the lease because a criminal record
had been found on me. I do have a criminal record but thats
not the point. The point is I filled out an application and
said I was approved and signed about 20 pages of a lease
agreement and then on the very day that I move in im called
and said im not approved. This is was a complete nightmare
for me and I had to make hasty arrangements for a temporary
place to live until I find something else. I know I dont
recall the apartment employee signing the lease but he
offered me it and had me sign everything and said
everything was good. Im really upset about this and do not
feel that this is just. Is there anything I can do about
this legally? Thanks
