Post: Stopping Someon's Mail Delivery w/out Permission.

    Posted by JD on 4/04/07

    Hi,

I was living in an apartment that the Health and Housing
Dept tagged as "Uninhabitable" due to contamination. I had
to move out to a hotel, but was supposed to move back in
after the repairs were completed. I ran a business from
this home, as well as lived there, so decided to keep my
mail going there because I was staying close by and could
    easily pick it up.

Suddely, my mail stopped. After a few days, I got
suspicious, and went to the Mailman and asked. He said, "Oh
yeah, your landlord told me to stop delivering your mail
and that you didn't live hear anymore."

Shortly after this, I recevied a note saying that I could
ot move back in, even though it was my legal right. (The
landlords had let it slip that he wanted to raise the
rent). I complained to the Housing Dept., and he began
    retaliatory eviction procedures.

I went to the post office, and confirmed that my mail had
not been legally stopped (my landlord did not put in a
change of address of mail hold).

By telling the Mailman, verbally, not to deliver my mail, I
stopped receving bills and important items. I never
received notice from my landlord, or anyone, that my mail
    would be stopped.

Is this legal, or did my landlord protect himself by not
    putting it in writing.

    Thanks for any input.

    JD
