As a general rule, an employer may reduce an employees hours as long as in doing does not breach the terms of an existing contract. However, you may want to consider whether or not the employee has recently engaged in protected activity (e.g., filed a workers comp claim, sexual harassment claim, recently took medical time off under state/federal law, etc.) The timing may create a presumption of unlawful retaliation. Good luck to you.
