That if he works on your case, he must then send you a written invoice billing you by the hour for the services he has performed. His rates can be set forth in the Bar rules too. If he never gave you a receipt for the $500 and never did anything for the money, and never billed you, then in Texaas he will be pursued by the Bar there. Good Luck
