Post: attorney won't fight for my rights in divorce settlement

    Posted by nancy on 1/18/03

I'm an older woman, whose husband filed for divorce in the
summer of 2002. I'm disabled to a large extent, and my
medicine bill alone is $900 a month. I no longer have
medical insurance because my husband took me off his
policy when he left me for another woman. Now, it's time
to go to court, and my attorney tells me that it's
impossible for me to make my husband pay for my medical
insurance, and impossible for me to get a part of my
husband's pension from the fire dept. I was married to
him for 20 years. The other woman broke up our marriage.
I feel like suing her. In the divorce settlement, I'm
supposed to get the house, although I can't afford to
maintain the expenses on it. There are liens on the house
because my husband got us into a whole lot of financial
trouble because of his lifestyle. Consequently, because
of our bad credit, the house insurance has skyrocketed,
and I stand to lose any which way I turn. I'm not ready
to settle this divorce yet, because I'm not satisfied at
all with the settlement that my attorney wants me to
take. I have paid him $1000, and he yells and screams at
me, and is bullying me into settling for almost nothing.
Please advise. I'm a nervous wreck.
