Why ever in the word would you listen to a relative of his
unless that relataive is an attorney who specializes in
family law and has seen the court's custoday order!
What his new wife thinkgs is irrelevant. As long as the
child is a minor, a child custody court order does
not "expire." It can, however, be modified by a court of
competent jurisdiction.
Here's a suggestion: Consult an attorney in your state.
