US customs do not treat Canadians the same as other illegal aliens from other countries. If you have any problems, return to Canada through land, and they cannot tell how long you have been to the US as visa stamps are not required. You can just lie and say 5 months when you have been gone for 5 years. If a canadian doesnt use visa, and goes as a short stayer, and returns to canada by land through the US Canada boarder, there is no chance you will get caught. You will however, not be able to legally work.
