If the landlord told people you know that you committed a crime, and the people are willing to testify as to what the landlord said, and you can prove that you did not commit the crime and the landlord was lying, then you have indeed a defamation case called "slander per se." That is, you can win a case without having to prove actual damages. If you can line up all these facts and people willing to testify, then go ahead and call some lawyers in your area and see if they would take the case.
